Labiaplasty: Surgical reduction of the labia minora and or labia majora.
Many women have questions regarding these structures. Please understand that there is no "normal" for this area, in the absence of pathology (e.g. tumor, vascular malformation, prior injury or trauma) whatever you may have is "normal".
What I offer my patients is a cosmetic alteration to the region which is intended to provide you with an appearance that you would prefer to have.
Potential indications include: excessive amounts of tissue which are repetitively traumatized during physical activities e.g. certain sports and intercourse, problematic hygiene (due to tissue redundancy), self consciousness related to its prominence in clothing and significant asymmetry.
Consultation: The first step is to determine if an operation is right for you. I am available for consultation and will discuss your options with you so that you can make an informed decision.
Potential Benefits: Reduction of the excessive tissue which may potentially reduce discomfort associated with repetitive trauma, facilitate improved local hygiene and improved self confidence due to diminished concerns over the appearance of the labia minora or majora.
Potential Risks: As with any operation requiring an incision, bleeding, infection, wound healing problems, scarring, recurrence and the need for additional operation(s) are always potential concerns.
Labiaplasty can be performed safely and appropriately through our ambulatory surgical center and may be performed, according to your preference with local anesthesia alone, local anesthesia and sedation or with general anesthesia. We do however require that you be driven home (even if the procedure is performed under local anesthesia only) and someone should stay with you the day of surgery.
Following your operation you will be given local wound care instructions and contact information should you desire to be seen at a time other than your regularly scheduled appointments. Routine follow-up visits occur at one week, six weeks, six months and one year following your operation.
Pain / Discomfort: medication is generally required for several days following
your operation. There will be some residual discomfort for a longer period of time, commonly several weeks, but this should not be so significant as to require narcotic pain medication for control.
Bruising and swelling: to some degree are anticipated, are variable and do tend to
persist for several weeks.
Cleansing should begin the day following operation and should be performed in
You will be instructed to abstain from vigorous physical activity and intercourse for six weeks following your operation. We also recommend no soaking in a bath, pool or hot tub for six weeks.
